In this series, photographed over two years of travel, Justine Kurland focuses on the distinct, nomadic subculture of the hobo. Her images of trains, train-hoppers, and the American West allude to a hobo mythology developed in folk songs and literature. Kurland's method combines a documentary process with romantic idealism, giving her images a naturalism inflected by utopian fantasy.

Xiong Wenyun found the inspiration for her work “Moving Rainbow” as she passed by the humble houses sprinkled along the highways of Tibet. She incorporates the colors of Tibetan prayer flags into their structures, creating striking compositions whose simple beauty is endowed with a message of environmental activism. “I hoped very much that the moving rainbows would awaken people’s concern for the natural ecology and the human environment along these roads that run across the roof of the world,” says Xiong Wenyun.

The images that Abbas Kiraostami presents of empty rainy roads sweeping past fields and trees are devoid of characters. They seem like empty sets which the great director is about to populate with actors. However, for Kiarostami, roads and trees are artists, interlocutors and companions. "From my very first photos, taken when I first picked up a camera, I realised that trees had more significance for me than human beings," he says. "I have always quoted Ibn Arabi, who says that "the tree is my sister."

I started mainly as a documentary photographer. Since then I am shifting slowly towards a more subliminal use of photography: using it as a medium of reflection. Colour, composition and light are very important, as is the slowness of the images of my recent work. Therefore, nowadays I use a medium format camera with negatives. Some people like the silence in my work. Some people say I am making a synthetisation of the German school dead pan photography and a more narrative and especially surreal touch.
