Introduction to Delizia Flaccavento's photo essay on Iraqi refugees in Turkey: One of the most tragic consequences of the war in Iraq is the mass exodus of Iraqis, which began in 2003 and has continued to the present. According to some estimates, two million Iraqis have fled the country and two million are internally displaced, having moved from the most dangerous areas, such as Baghdad, to the relatively safer North of the country.

Dalia Khamissy: Wednesday July 12, 2006, Hezbollah militants captured two Israeli soldiers in an operation that sparked a series of attacks on Lebanon’s infrastructure, civilians’ houses and natural environment. The offensive lasted for 34 days, during which I was working as the photo editor for an international news agency in its Beirut office; I only saw the conflict through the images that I edited of other photographers. The country was packed with local and international media that transmitted their stories for few weeks after the cease-fire until the world lost interest in Lebanon’s news, and the citizens, whose lives had changed forever, were forgotten. I quit my job by the end of 2006.

While Fataneh Dadkhah (published yesterday) narrows her focus to a painted face Shadi Ghadirian empties her scenes of characters altogether and allows their possessions to take over. For her Nil Nil series she photographs military objects - helmet, canteen, bayonet, ammunition belt, and so on – in a domestic setting. Removed from their context, these accoutrements of war appear at once menacing and delicate, their agression tempered by the feminine element.

In his Shade of Earth series, Kowsari captures the annual pilgrimage that many Iranians make to the Iran–Iraq war frontline. During the war (1980–1988), Iran lost over half a million soldiers and so each year hundreds of thousands of Iranians travel to the fronts to remember the family members they lost. This trip is called ‘Rahian-e Noor’, or Caravan of Light, and is made in during ‘Noruz’, the Iranian New Year holiday in the last week of March. The former battle grounds become a theatre of grief for the mothers, sisters, brothers, fathers, wives, friends and families who take the long journey to remember. Kowsari’s moving photographs of the pilgrims contemplating their loss, and the ceremonial processions of flag bearers amongst the barren wasteland of the former warzone, speak volumes about the impact of war on those left behind.

I began taking photographs when I was a young soldier and at a time when I knew little about photography. I just had this urge to document what was going on around me.

I have now been out of the British Army over 15 years, but it is an area that still dominates my photographic practice and my imagination.

As part of this ongoing interest I have chosen to document the after-effects of conflict and the knock-on consequences back home in the UK.

From severe injuries of war to the problems of homelessness and social exclusion, I hope that this work questions notion of what it means to enlist to serve ones country, and what is left for servicemen at the end of this dangerous and altruistic act.
