Homeless in the wake of Hurricane Katrina
A few months after the Katrina tragedy I decided to travel to New Orleans, with mixed emotions. I wanted to try and create what was to be my first documentary photography project. But the idea of taking the trip was also scaring me. I had no experience in undertaking such a venture, I wasn’t sure I would be able to get access to some of the places I had in mind visiting.
Then FEMA decided to allow me access into one of the biggest ‘displaced by Katrina’ facilities they had set up, located in Baker, two hours north of New Orleans.
Carrying my 4×5 inch camera around, talking and listening to people, I felt for the first time completely at ease with where I was and with what I was doing. I have been working on documentary portrait series since.
