Artur Eranosian - Introduction and Curator Statement

This week I am presenting you seven young talented photographers from Belgium. My country produced a significant number of internationally acclaimed photographers. This is the new generation. Apart from a blogger I am a photography student myself and the photographers presented here are my sources of inspiration. They are all documentary photographers and each is in the process of developing his/her own style.

Alice Smeets manages to combine sadness with beauty. To me her work is like poetry. She confronts us with reality the right way, not putting us in shock, allowing us to really think about the situation she depicts.

Haiti

Alice Smeets (Belgium, 1987)

I am yet to meet someone who has not been not moved by Haiti’s beautiful landscapes, colorful streets and rich culture. Nor have I met anyone who was not shocked by its poverty. Haiti is full of contrast and complexity.

I once heard someone say that “you can spend years in Haiti and still not understand the place.” In 1804 Haiti attracted the world’s attention by becoming the first black republic to declare independence. Today it attracts attention for being the poorest Nation in the Western Hemisphere.

This is a country where thousands of children live on the streets, young girls prostitute themselves to survive.

But also a country where the people are strong, smile every minute and wear their best clothes every day.

Artist statement: I am a young freelance photographer based in Belgium. I decided to dedicate my life to showing the stories life has written with my camera. I try to recognize the beauty of things and, at the same time, I try to capture the cruelties the human race has to deal with. I want to touch people’s feelings without shocking them to provoke a reaction as a result.
