Curator statement
The work of Christina Calbari, either it is staged performances of the photographer in front of the lens or ominous drawings framing slightly distorted family pictures, is weaved by the same leading thread. Calbari examines a self fragmented by painful memories, the loss of identity as a possible result of social rituals such as family, education, marriage. In her photographs, one can identify innocence often lost early and the taxing work necessary afterwards for one’s own, true self to emerge. Hercules Papaioannou is the curator of the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography. Christina Calbari on the web: calbari.com.
