Curator statement
Portraits and self-portraits are consistently the focus of Athina Chroni’s interests. Black and white or colour, in a bare studio or in private spaces, they often exploit a poetic mood and the illusion of the third dimension in order to attempt a peek into the innermost of being. Similarly, they turn away visibly from the conventional idea of a portrait as flattering or, in any case, from the explicit portrayal of the human form, seeking to pull up to the surface a deeper inner condition.
